Double the Love, Double the Intensity – Pregnant with Twins
Pregnancy is intense on any body. The pregnant body shape shifts and morphs on a grand scale. While this is perfectly normal, it feels so abnormal to our sense of self, which we’ve become so comfortable with over several decades. With twins (or higher order multiples) this shift in being is amplified. And oh baby (ies), is it ever intense – the perks and the less perky times included.
I became pregnant with twins 3 years ago and the body I had was beyond anything I’ve ever experienced. I gained 50lbs, surpassing my partner in weight. My organs moved into new positions and my blood volume increased somewhere in the range of 40-60 percent.
I carried two placentas that started off separate and then merged, divided by a membrane. These placentas helped contribute to my morning sickness and tiredness. I was sick for 32 out of my 38 weeks of pregnancy and took a nap at least once, sometimes twice a day – how I yearn for those naps now!
Yet, while I was tired, from nourishing and growing two babies, I never grew tired of feeling my babies move.
4 feet kicking, 4 arms, and 4 hands flailing
20 toes, 20 fingers growing, learning and exploring together.
This was magical.
3 brains working together, to become united lives.
Our bodies curled up, nuzzled tightly, in a way that we still mimic today.
It was never short of miraculous to know that there were 3 hearts beating in my body.
Blood circulating, so powerfully, through all 3 of our bodies at once.
Isn’t that beautiful to think about?
Pregnancy brings on a heck of a lot. Pregnancy with twins brings on significantly more.
3 bodies. 2 babies. And endless love.
