Who Are the Families I Support? They're Probably A Lot Like You! ❤️
I was recently asked, at an initial consult, what I look for when choosing who to work with. I love this question. Here is the qualities I look for in prenatal, birth and postnatal clients:
❥ A genuine need and respect for doula support. Most people have heard about the benefits of doula support services, from friends, family and/or their health care team - and there are truly so many benefits! Families I work with know that they will get high quality, evidence based information, hands on tips, tricks and support, and a genuinely caring and compassionate doula. They value our experience and education and know that the price tag is 100% worth it.
❥ A willingness to ask questions. Using the acronym B.R.A.I.N. is something I always encourage. Essentially, it means assessing the Benefits, Risks & Alternatives, questioning your Intuition and understanding what happens if you do Nothing. Most people naturally do this already, in their regular life situations. Our role together is to develop way that you can apply this to pregnancy, birth, and parenting.
❥ An understanding of what good communication looks like. The key to a great partnership, including with your doula, is communication. That means active listening and an understanding about the key points of the role of a doula, what information to share with your doula and of course, when to call or send a message (all of this is reviewed during initial consultations and prenatal visits).
❥ Kindness, a sense of humour and genuinely great people! Kindness is my jam and laughter makes any situation lighter. If you’re a downright awesomely kind person and like to laugh, I’m pretty sure, we’ll be a good fit!
Chances are that you’ll see yourself amongst these descriptions. If so, I’d love to chat further about how we can work together. And if not, there is another awesome doula (Toronto offers the best!) out there ready to support you on your journey!
