Real Food for Pregnancy - A Book Review

When I was contacted by the publishers of Real Food for Pregnancy, to review Lily Nichols’ newest book, I was thrilled. Not only is it pretty awesome to be sent something, but it’s also an honour to be asked to add a review of content, as a professional in the field. Plus, I love to be kept up to date on evidence based research on all things pregnancy, birth, and baby.

Lily Nichols is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Educator, living in the United States. She prides herself on extensive and scientifically backed information, that truly makes sense and can be easily adapted to people’s lives. Her first booked tackled Gestational Diabetes and received amazing reviews (now that I’ve read Real Food for Pregnancy, I will certainly be checking out Real Food for Gestational Diabetes).

So, is it worth your time to invest in this book? Here are three reasons why I think you should check out this book:

✔️It is full of sound and reliable information

This is an incredibly well researched book that covers such a wide range of pertinent information. The book breaks down the meaning of nutrition and how it applies to the pregnant body. Nichols also explores hot topics like alcohol and caffeine - these sections are definitely worth checking out.

One of my favourite chapters is titled Pregnancy Expectations & Common Complaints. Here she covers Nausea and Vomiting, Food Aversions and Cravings, Heartburn, Constipation and Hemorrhoids, Weight Gain, High Blood Pressure and High Blood Sugar. I personally suffered from a few of these and could have used Nichols’ non-authoritative and balanced opinion. Her explanations and tips have certainly expanded my knowledge base, to now share with pregnant families.

✔️It is easy to read

Real Food for Pregnancy is 324 pages, which includes 33 pages of references (Yes! This is a well researched book.) and 33 pages of recipes. The Table of Contents is well thought out and the book is very easy to navigate and jump in and out of. Nichols avoids the usage of nutritional jargon, which keeps the content accessible.

My one critique would be that there are no pictures - I would have loved to see some to break up the text, particularly as this is a book on food, there could be lots of image possibilities.

✔️Growing a human? Helping people that are growing a human? This is ALL applicable.

Real Food for Pregnancy is applicable to ALL pregnant families AND anyone that supports pregnant families. There truly is information and tips that every person growing a human, or supporting a body growing a human, can benefit from. The recipes also look delicious and I’m pretty sure I’ll be adding them to my repertoire soon! 😋🥙🍇
